How to Charge

  1. To open the charge port, located on the passenger side rear, ensure the vehicle is unlocked and press on the left side of the door.
  2. Retrieve the charge connector and connect to the port. The connector is designed to ensure alignment as you connect. Note that some public charging stations require an additional step in order to release a connector for retrieval and charge activation—directions are generally listed at these locations or in complimentary apps.
  3. Depending on your charge settings, your charging session may start immediately for immediate charging or may wait for a specific time to begin should you have a scheduled charging parameter programmed. Charging status details will be shown on the vehicle’s Infotainment screen.

DC Fast Charging

Level 3 DC charging can be performed at a public charging station where it is charged with a very high charging power. This significantly reduces the charging time.

  1. Remove the Level 3 protective cap from the charge port and stick it on the hanger located on the inside of the charging flap.
  2. Retrieve the connector from the charging unit and connect to the port.
  3. Activate the charge via mobile app, charger screen, or other instructions on the charger.
  4. Charging will commence. Status may be reviewed on the vehicle’s center screen as well as on the charging unit’s display, if equipped. Many charging network providers often provide status through their complimentary apps.

NOTICE: A very high charging power is used for fast-charging with DC. Frequent fast-charging can permanently decrease battery capacity. Charge the high-voltage battery primarily with AC at a charging station or wall box.

Charging Status

Charging status can be read during charging from the indicator light inside the charge port, from the ID. Light at the front of the dashboard, and from the Infotainment screen where charge session details will be shown:

NACS DC Adapter Image

NACS DC Adapter

To charge your Volkswagen EV at a Tesla Supercharger with the genuine Volkswagen NACS DC adapter, you'll first need to download the Tesla mobile app and enter your vehicle's information. This will let you find Tesla Superchargers that are compatible with the Volkswagen NACS DC adapter, and also pay for, start, and stop your charging session.

Also, keep in mind that you’ll need to position your vehicle so that the charging cable can reach the vehicle’s charge port.

Watch the Charging with the Volkswagen NACS DC Adapter video.

The Volkswagen NACS DC adapter is designed exclusively for DC fast chargers with NACS connectors (e.g. compatible Tesla Superchargers) and is not compatible with Level 1 or Level 2 chargers, home chargers, Destination Chargers, or Mobile Connectors. Misuse may result in damage, safety hazards, and injuries. Ensure your vehicle always has the most up-to-date available software.

To begin charging:

  1. Open your charge port, and remove the protective cap.
  2. Remove the NACS DC connector from the charging station.
  3. Make sure the charging cable, NACS DC adapter, and vehicle charge port are free from debris, then insert the NACS DC charge cable connector into the NACS DC adapter.
  4. Plug the combined charging connector assembly into the vehicle's charge port.
  5. Open the Tesla mobile app and choose "Find a Charger," then select the location and confirm your payment method and charging post number.

When charging is complete:

  1. Unlock the vehicle, then hold down the port release button on top of the adapter to remove the charging connector assembly.
  2. Replace the protective cap, and close the charge port.
  3. Hold down the adapter release button on the bottom of the adapter and pull to remove the adapter from the charging cable connector.
  4. Return the charging cable to the charging station.
