Recall FAQ
General Recall QA
Recalls are conducted to address issues affecting motor vehicle safety and/or emissions defects. They also address problems that can cause a vehicle to be out of compliance with U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards or EPA/CARB emissions-related regulatory requirements. Any recall work your vehicle needs should be completed at a Volkswagen dealer as soon as possible.
No — recalls do not have an expiration date.
CLICK HERE to use our Recall/Service Campaign Lookup service to check and see if there are any recalls on your vehicle.
Alternate transportation can vary depending on the recall/campaign. Please contact your Volkswagen dealer for further information.
All recall/campaign work must be completed at a Volkswagen dealership. To schedule an appointment, click here. If you live in Hawaii or Alaska, please contact Volkswagen Customer CARE at 1-800-822-8987 for assistance in scheduling this important work.
Yes. If you received a recall letter concerning your vehicle, you need to schedule an appointment with a Volkswagen dealer to have the recall work performed.
Recall repairs are FREE.
However, there are times when you will have to pay for vehicle repairs before your dealer can do the recall work. For example:
- If you have aftermarket equipment installed on your vehicle and your dealer determines that it would interfere with or prevent the safe completion of the recall repair, you will need to have the aftermarket equipment removed at your expense before the recall work can be done.
- If there is damage to your vehicle and your dealer determines that it would interfere with or prevent the safe completion of the recall repair, you will need to have the damage repaired at your expense before the recall work can be done.
- If there is a pre-existing vehicle issue (such as a vehicle problem that causes an illuminated warning light) and your dealer determines that it would interfere or prevent the safe completion of the recall repair, you will need to have the problem fixed before the recall work can be done.
Please contact your Volkswagen dealer as soon as possible. They will help you make arrangements to get your vehicle to the dealership and perform a diagnosis to determine what the problem is. If the diagnosis confirms the recall issue, Volkswagen will cover the diagnosis and repair for FREE. However, if the diagnosis shows that the problem is not related to the recall, Volkswagen will cover only the diagnosis for FREE; your dealer will let you know what repairs will be needed, and what your cost will be to have the work done.
Recalls affect vehicles built during a certain production timeframe and may also only apply to vehicles with certain types of engines or specific options/equipment. Because of this, cars similar to yours may be recalled, but your car is not affected. Checking with your Volkswagen dealer, or using the VIN lookup tool on vw.com are both very good ways to see if your car is included in a recall or not.
If you have incurred out-of-pocket expenses directly related to a campaign repair and would like to request reimbursement, information on what Volkswagen needs to review your request is included in the recall letter you received.
Please note: Not every Campaign/Recall will have a reimbursement program available. The Campaign/Recall letter received by the customer will indicate whether a reimbursement program is being offered.
Please provide legible copies of receipts, invoices and/or repair orders and keep the originals for your records. Documents will not be returned.
For all requests, please include the following:
- Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) of the repaired vehicle
- Name and Address of the person who paid for the repair (receiving reimbursement)
- Legible repair orders and/or itemization of repair that was completed (keep originals- documents will not be returned)
- Legible copies of proof of payment (receipts, invoices, cancelled checks, bank/credit statement)
- The name, address and phone number of the repair facility that performed the work
To submit Online: Email us by Clicking here Reimbursement.Request@vw.com
To Submit by Mail:
Volkswagen of America, Inc.
Attn: Campaign Reimbursement
3800 Hamlin Rd, Auburn Hills, MI 48326
Please Note:
- Your claim will be acted upon within 60 days of receipt. If your claim is approved, you will receive a check from Volkswagen. Reimbursement may be limited to the amount the repair would cost if it had been completed by a Volkswagen dealer or authorized repair facility
- If your claim is incomplete, we will contact you and request any additional required information to support your claim
- If your claim is denied, we will contact you with the reason(s) for denial
Without the required documentation showing diagnosis/repair from an authorized Volkswagen dealer or licensed repair facility, it is unlikely that your reimbursement request will be paid if you performed your own vehicle repairs.
Volkswagen will send you another letter via first-class mail when the recall repair is available for your vehicle. Until then, if you have any questions or vehicle concerns, please contact your local Volkswagen dealer or click here to Contact Us.
Automakers are required by Federal law to notify owners within 60 days of notifying the government (NHTSA) about a new recall. Because it takes time to develop, test, manufacture and ship repair parts to dealers, it's not possible for dealers to begin performing recall repairs within that 60-day timeframe. It's important for owners to be aware of recalls affecting their vehicles, whether or not a repair is available.
If you have any questions or vehicle concerns, please contact your local Volkswagen dealer or click here to Contact Us.
Yes. If you received a recall letter concerning your vehicle, you need to schedule an appointment with a Volkswagen dealer to have the recall work performed.

Safety Recall 34J6
VW Jetta Hybrid – Model Years 2013 – 2015 - USA
Hairline cracks may develop in the accumulator housing of the transmission (mechatronic unit). The crack may lead to an internal leak, which, in turn, may lead to insufficient transmission oil pressure. If this happens, the transmission warning light will illuminate in the instrument panel. If the warning light is ignored and the vehicle is driven, the clutch may not engage. Failure of the clutch to engage may cause a sudden loss of power to the wheels, potentially leading to a vehicle crash.
Your authorized Volkswagen dealer will perform a TCM software update that will reduce the maximum pressure in the accumulator housing in order to reduce the stress level.
This recall repair is not yet available, and is estimated to be available late 2020. Volkswagen will send you a letter via first-class mail to let you know when you can schedule the repair with your dealer.
Customers are advised: Do not ignore the transmission warning light if it comes on. If the light comes on, owners are advised to contact an authorized Volkswagen dealer without delay to have the vehicle inspected. Please refer to the vehicle owner’s manual for more information on warning lights.

Due to a possible manufacturing error, the electronic brake booster pressure input rod may not be correctly attached to the brake pedal. This may lead to a reduced pedal ratio and to an increased actuating force or to a disconnection of the pressure input rod. Additionally, in the event of a failure of the 12V power supply, the brake performance may be impaired due to the reduced pedal ratio and the resulting increased actuation force. An increased actuating force or a disconnected input rod may lead to abnormal brake behavior and may increase the risk for a crash.
To correct this defect, dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the electronic brake booster and mounting of the pressure rod OR the mounting of the pressure rod only, depending on the inspection results.

The recall condition can result in a fault that causes the airbag light to be illuminated. When illuminated, in the event of certain side crash scenarios that would cause the side airbag to deploy, the side airbag may deploy later than designed. This may lead to an increased injury to vehicle occupants.
You can continue driving your vehicle if you are not currently experiencing the issues that may potentially be caused by the recall condition. Please ensure that everyone who uses your vehicle has read the owner’s manual and is familiar with how the warning lights in your vehicle function.
If the potential condition that is the subject of the recall is present in the vehicle, the airbag warning light may illuminate if a malfunction is detected. Other symptoms of a sporadic interruption of the affected electrical connection can be: inadvertently rolling down windows, inadvertent park brake engagement at low speeds (below approximately 3km/h or 1.8 mph), warning regarding faulty door sensor.
Customers experiencing any of these conditions are advised to contact an authorized Volkswagen dealer to have their vehicle diagnosed/repaired without delay.
To address this potential issue, your authorized Volkswagen dealer will check both front doors to determine if diagnostic trouble (fault) code(s) specific to the affected wiring harness are actually present. If the fault code(s) are present for a front door, the affected wiring harness will be replaced in that door. Harnesses will be modified with a zip tie to secure them, and a stabilizing compound will be applied to the terminal ends of the affected wiring harness connectors.
If fault code(s) are not found, the existing wiring harness will be modified with a zip tie to secure it and a stabilizing compound will be applied to the terminal ends of the affected wiring harness connector(s).

During vehicle production, the radiator may not have been affixed correctly to the intercooler. This can result in the radiator becoming loose and causing a coolant hose to contact the V-belt pulley. A coolant hose that contacts the V-belt pulley can become damaged, potentially resulting in a coolant leak. A large amount of coolant leaking onto the roadway may increase the risk of a crash for the following traffic. If the red warning light in the instrument cluster is ignored and the vehicle continues to be driven without coolant, the engine may overheat, potentially leading to a vehicle fire.
If a low coolant level is detected, the driver will see a red warning light in the instrument cluster. Customers with vehicles experiencing this condition are advised to contact an authorized Volkswagen dealer without delay to have the vehicle inspected.
To address this potential issue, your authorized Volkswagen dealer will inspect the affected vehicles to see if the radiator is correctly affixed to the intercooler. If a loose connection is found, the coolant hose and the poly V-belt will be checked for damage. If damage is found, the damaged parts will be replaced.

The proper tightening procedure at the supplier may not have been performed on the bolts on the driver side (left side) rear trailing arm. The bolts may loosen over time and fall out, or the trailing arm may fracture due to overload around the remaining bolt(s). This could cause excessive movement of the driver side (left side) rear wheel bearing carrier, which can lead to a change in vehicle handling characteristics. If this were to occur there could be a sudden loss of vehicle control. This may increase the risk of a crash.
If the affected bolts loosen, the customer may notice an unusual (knocking) noise from the rear suspension and possibly a change in the vehicle handling. Should this occur, owners are advised to contact an authorized Volkswagen dealer without delay to have the vehicle inspected/repaired.
To address this potential issue, your authorized Volkswagen dealer will replace the driver side (left side) rear trailing arm bolts.

A brake line may leak at the threaded connections. Brake fluid leaks can lead to an increase in stopping distance, which may increase the risk of a crash. If a leak is present, the low brake fluid warning light will illuminate in the instrument panel. After the reservoir of the potentially affected brake circuit is completely depleted, the brake pedal travel may begin to increase or the pedal may begin to feel soft.
Affected vehicles can continue to be driven as usual, but if the brake fluid warning light illuminates, or if the brake pedal travel increases or feels soft, customers are advised to contact the nearest authorized Volkswagen dealer or qualified workshop without delay in order to have the vehicle inspected/repaired.
To address this potential issue, your authorized Volkswagen dealer will replace the affected brake lines.
