June 14, 2022

Back in the 60s, the Volkswagen bus was an iconic piece of pop culture: Along with bell bottom jeans and psychedelic guitar solos, the decade would be unimaginable without the vehicle’s distinctive design.

Now, the camo’s off and people young and old are abuzz with the return of this legend in EV form—the ID. Buzz. This fun, free-spirited vehicle combines the adventurous nature of its predecessor with the cutting-edge technology and engineering of today. And for all the new and exciting design elements the ID. Buzz is quickly becoming known for, it also delivers when it comes to its less obvious features.

Sustainable Treasures from Battery to Bonnet

As part of the VW EV lineup, the ID. Buzz features an efficient, electric motor that does not produce direct emissions under its vibrantly colored exterior. The electric motor generates an impressive 201 horsepower and 229 foot-pound of torque. Also, with a drag coefficient of just 0.285, the ID. Buzz helps drivers to get the most out of every charge.

But it doesn’t stop there. Inside, the European model’s seat coverings incorporate recycled materials made in part from diverted ocean-bound plastic. The proprietary SEAQUAL® YARN used on the van’s seats is made of 90% recycled PET bottles and 10% marine plastic.

Design Easter Eggs Enthusiasts Are Loving

Designed for comfort and convenience, the ID. Buzz is a state-of-the-art vehicle whose interior space can be configured in ways that support the needs of every driver. But what truly sets the vehicle apart is the same whimsy that helped the original bus galvanize the counterculture—this time in the form of some cleverly placed Easter eggs.

First is the group of winking smiley faces on each front door handle alcove. They serve a functional purpose in covering the screw to detach the door panel but are also designed to make your day just a little better. Next, cute zooming silhouettes of the ID. Buzz are etched into the upholstery throughout the van, including in the trunk. There’s also an ice scraper and bottle opener that can be found in the removable center console. Finally, to showcase the bus’s rain protection systems, the vehicle features a mini umbrella decal on the bottom of the side window shielding an ID. Buzz silhouette from the elements.
