After historic wildfires ravaged Southern California in January 2025, one blue 1977 VW Bus, affectionately named Azul by its owner Megan, emerged relatively unscathed. A viral photo caught the world’s attention and inspired Volkswagen technicians, who restored Azul to like-new condition.
This miraculous symbol of resilience inspires hope for the future in a rebuilding community—and beyond.
Contacto con Megan
With help from the VW enthusiast community, Volkswagen of America connected with Azul’s owner, Megan Weinraub, to assess the condition of her bus. After finding it wasn’t roadworthy, VW offered to try to restore Azul to pre-fires form. “Getting that call was such a relief,” remembers Weinraub. “I knew Azul was becoming a symbol of hope and that people wanted to see more of her, but I had so much to work through at the time that I wasn’t sure how to approach it.”
